On the mechanics of fracture in monoliths and multilayers from low-velocity impact by sharp or blunt-tip projectiles

چکیده
The propagation of cracks in layered glass from low-velocity impact of sharp or spherical tip projectiles is observed using high-speed photography. Tests are also carried out to determine the threshold impact energy for chipping in glass blocks and subsurface crack instability in an edge-supported glass plates. The results identify the median and subsurface radial crack systems as the prime damage sources in such applications. A dynamic fracture analysis is developed assuming elastic contact and quasi-static load transfer between target and projectile. The equation of motion of the latter is solved analytically taking into consideration localized elastic contact and plastic penetration of the tool into the material as well as flexural deformations. The growth history of the median crack is then found using an appropriate relationship between crack length and contact load. The predicted crack propagation history of the median crack and the threshold impact energy for chipping or flexure-induced subsurface crack instability compare well with the tests. The analysis explicitly exposes the role of projectile mass, bluntness and velocity, the target’s stiffness, toughness and hardness, and the interface critical stress on damage tolerance of wellbonded layered structures. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Plastic Wave Propagation Model for Perforation of Metallic Plates by Blunt Projectiles
In this paper, a six-stage interactive model is presented for the perforation of metallic plates using blunt deformable projectiles when plastic wave propagation in both target and projectile is considered. In this analytical model, it is assumed that the projectile and target materials are rigid – plastic linear work hardened. The penetration of the projectile into the target is divided into s...

In this article, Finite Element Method (FEM) and Eulerian-Lagrangies Algorithm (ELA) formulation were used to numerically simulate the impact of several low-velocity projectiles with water surface. Material models which were used to express behavior of air and water included Null material model. For the projectiles, rigid material model were applied. Results were validated by analyzing the impa...

The ballistic response of the high strength, low alloy (HSLA-100) steel at ambient and temperatures of -400°C, -800°C and -1960°C is investigated in this work. Lambert-jonas equation is used to fit the experimental results into a curve. The effect of quenching on ballistic behavior of HSLA-100 is also studied. The experiments are conducted on 3mm thick rectangular specimens impacted by blunt ti...
